Marist Values and Charism
Our Values
The Marist Brothers' values and charism are rooted in their commitment to following Christ in the way of Mary, placing a strong emphasis on humility, simplicity, and a family spirit. These values stem from the teachings and vision of St. Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, who believed in forming "good Christians and virtuous citizens" through education and pastoral care. Here’s a closer look at these core Marist values and charism:

Presence
Marist Brothers are called to be a "presence" in the lives of young people, especially those most neglected. This means not only being physically present but also emotionally and spiritually available, forming authentic relationships based on care, respect, and trust. This presence fosters a nurturing environment where young people feel valued and supported.
Simplicity
Simplicity is a central Marist value, expressed in the straightforwardness and sincerity of how they live, speak, and interact with others. Inspired by Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the Marist Brothers strive to avoid any pretense, choosing instead a life of humility and honesty. This simplicity fosters an environment where people feel safe and accepted, echoing St. Marcellin’s call to “be true and honest.”
Family Spirit
Marist communities are known for their family spirit, creating a close-knit, supportive community that is inclusive and nurturing. This value reflects a familial bond among the Brothers, students, and collaborators, encouraging a sense of unity and belonging. This spirit of family is inspired by the Holy Family of Nazareth and is especially important in their educational mission.
Love of Work
For the Marist Brothers, work is a way to honor God and serve others. They view education not just as a profession but as a vocation and an expression of their love for young people. By committing to their work wholeheartedly, they aim to inspire students to develop a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility.
In the Way of Mary
Central to the Marist charism is the devotion to Mary. The Marist Brothers seek to emulate Mary's gentle, humble way of serving others and her unwavering faith. They believe in “seeing the world through Mary’s eyes,” which calls them to care for others with compassion and gentleness, just as Mary cared for Jesus.

Charism
The Marist charism is a unique blend of these values, reflecting a deep commitment to making Jesus known and loved. It combines a contemplative focus on God with an active dedication to service, especially in education. The charism embodies St. Marcellin's belief in nurturing young people, particularly the most vulnerable, through both academic and spiritual formation. Marist Brothers work to create spaces where youth can grow in faith, character, and intellect, grounded in a strong moral foundation. The Marist values and charism continue to inspire Marist educators, students, and communities worldwide, calling them to live lives marked by compassion, humility, and a commitment to positive change in society.
