Vocation Process

✦ Our Process

Our Step-By-Step Approach

The vocation process for the Nigerian Marist Brothers follows a structured path, focusing on discernment, spiritual growth, and formation. Here’s an overview of the steps involved:

Initial Inquiry and Discernment

This stage is for those feeling called to the Marist way of life. Men interested in the Marist Brothers meet with a vocation director, attend discernment retreats, and are guided through prayer and reflection to understand their calling.

Aspirancy Program

If they choose to continue, they enter the aspirancy program, which can last several months to a year. Here, candidates live in a Marist community, engage in daily prayer, and participate in community life to deepen their understanding of Marist values and mission.

Postulancy

In this stage, candidates formally begin their journey as postulants, living in a Marist community full-time. Postulants engage in spiritual and academic studies, further discern their call, and continue to grow in the Marist way of life. This stage usually lasts about a year.

Novitiate

After postulancy, candidates move into the novitiate phase, which lasts about two years. Novices undergo an intense period of spiritual formation, studying Marist spirituality, Catholic theology, and religious life principles. They also make a commitment to Marist values of humility, simplicity, and service.

Temporary Profession

Upon completing their novitiate, candidates take their first temporary vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. This period allows them to live as Marist Brothers while continuing formation. Temporary vows are typically renewed annually for several years as they gain experience in ministry and community life.

Final Profession

After several years in temporary vows, the Brother may take perpetual vows, committing to the Marist life permanently. This step marks the culmination of the formation process, making the Brother a lifelong member of the Marist Brothers, fully devoted to their mission.
